abstract = "The New Brazilian Forest Code, Law nº 12,651 / 2012, set up the
adoption of new parameters in the definition of permanent
preservation areas (PPA). Hilltops, mountains and mountain ranges
have suffered severe losses of environmental protection. The New
Code has generated difficulties for mapping the PPAs, because The
demarcation of the PPAs in field is a complex procedure since the
New Code perspective. Technical knowledge, use of specific
instruments and access are extra difficulties. This study aims a
comparison among the old PPAs (CONAMA Resolution No. 303/02) and
the new one (Law nº 12,651 / 2012). As case study was used the
Upper Watershed Camaqu{\~a} region, Rio Grande do Sul State,
Brazil. The present study was divided into two stages: the mapping
of APPs top of the hill, in the BH Camaqu{\~a} Alto, according to
the terms of Resolution CONAMA and the delimitation of these APPs
according to the Brazilian Forest Code 2012. The altimetric
information plans (IPs) of the TOPODATA database as well as PIs
vector hydrography lines were used. The DEM was reversed as
strategy of work. Using the old Forest Code 244,7 square
kilometers of PPA were quantified, while according to the New
Forest Code 0,27 square kilometers were identified. This decrease
in area is due to new parameters adopted for the delimitation of
APPs, especially regarding the slope and amplitude of the
altimetry.",
